NUSWhispers – Confession #89486

I am studying Quantitative Finance at NUS. Since the implementation of modreg, we have not been able to bid for our 3k and 4k compulsory modules from the business school in the first round of bidding as they want to "protect their students". I have reached out to the professor in charge of our major last semester during modreg, but it seems nothing was done as I still cannot bid for these modules in the first round this semester. In the second round, most of the slots would already be taken, leaving almost no choice for us in terms of timetable scheduling. What is the point then, in declaring my major, when I can only bid for the same modules as math majors in round 1? While seemingly trivial, I was unable to secure the module last semester due to timetable clashes in the time slots that were left for us, resulting in me filing for unofficial honours for this semester. What if I am unable to get the module again this semester? I am also concerned for my juniors who might possibly face the same setback as me. In addition, our provost recently mentioned that "NUS is planning to pilot 10 Cross-disciplinary Degree Programmes (CDPs) across a variety of disciplines in Academic Year 2021/2022, as part of the University’s effort to adopt fresh approaches in higher education." Is NUS ready for these students to enter and to offer their modules to them? Is business school going to use the same excuse that their main faculty is not business school and hence they are not protected in the first round? What can be done to ensure these students do not have to face the same consequences such as filing for unofficial honours and worrying that I might get kicked out without finishing my honours year due to the inability to obtain just one module?
